Empowering Indigenous Women as Agents of Climate Resilience

National Indigenous Women's Federation with the support from International Indigenous Women's Forum(FIMI) (from 23 September 2024 to 22 September 2025) implement the project entitled "Empowering Indigenous Women as Agents of Climate Resilience". The major outcomes of the project are: Enhanced knowledge and evidence for building resilience to climate extremes is built and used at the community level, Improved knowledge and skills of Indigenous Women on community-based disaster risk reduction and management, Increased awareness of the national policies and international instruments related to climate change and disaster risk reduction and local Indigenous Knowledge is shared for learning. 


Project Background:

The project aligns with the organizations objectives, addressing key areas of empowerment, representation, institutional strengthening and advocacy for Indigenous women. It not only promotes their rights but also positions them as leaders and key actors in climate resilience and community-based disaster risk reduction. The project focuses on capacity building, enhancing Indigenous women's knowledge and skills in climate change adaptation and mitigation.


Projects Obectives:

General Objectives: Build and enhance the resilience of indigenous Women to mitigate, adapt to, and manage climate change impacts and disaster risks, thereby reducing their vulnerability and ensuring sustainable development.

Specific Objectives:

  1. Increase climate change adaptation knowledge and skills of the indigenous women
  2. Demonstrate the capacity of indigenous women for disaster risk reduction and management at the community level.
  3. Build critical awareness and understanding of indigenous practices, national and international policies and instruments and document learning on climate change and disaster risk reduction and management.


Activities carried out under the project:

A. Conducted 7 days residential Trainers of Trainers (TOT) Training on climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation and Community based Disaster Risk from December 6-12, 2024 at Pension Vasana Hotel, Dillibazar,Kathmandu.


B.Training on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation:

1. Organized two-day training on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Jhapa District targeting three main Indigenous Women Communities of Meche, Rajbanshi and Tajpuriya on 5-6 January, 2025.


2. Two days Training on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Kathamandu targeting four Indigenous women communities of Sherpa, Sunuwar, Baram and Yolmo.




3. Two Days Training on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation at Nepalgunj targeting Raji and Kusunda Indigenous Communities.



C. Provided Startup Support to Sherpa Indigenous Community, Tajpuriya Indigenous Community, Rajbanshi Indigenous Community, Meche Indigenous Community, Kusunda Indigenous Community, Raji Indigenous Community and Yolmo Indigenous community.

E. Interaction with Local Government on Climate Change Policy

1. Interaction with Local Government on Climate Change Policy at Priti, UmaKunda Rural Municipality, Ramechhap on 26th January 2025.


2. Interaction with Local Government on Climate Change Policy at Arughat Rural Municipality, Gorkha on 9 March, 2025 with the participation of Baram Indigenous Women and Elected Representatives of the Rural Municipality Policy.


3. Glimpse of the Interaction Program held at Solududhkunda Municipality, Solukhumbu on 24 March,2025 with the presence of Deputy Mayor Gandhi Maya Tamang along with Sherpa Indigenous Women Community.


4. Interaction Program held at Haldibari Rural Municipality, Jhapa on 10 April, 2025 with the presence of Elected Representatives along with Meche Indigenous Women Communities.


5. Interaction Program held at Ghorahi Sub Metropolitian City, Dang on 20 April 2025 with Local government and Kusunda Indigenous women communities.


6. Interaction with Local Government on Climate Change Policy at Indrawati Rural Municipality, Sindhupalchowk on May 8, 2025.


F. Interaction with NIWF Member Organization on Climate change at Surya Heritage Hotel:


G. Project Monitoring was conducted together with  the project Coordinator and board members from the relevant Indigenous Community, also monitoring with FIMI was conducted.
