Our Project
Khokana Programme
The Khokana Programme refers to initiatives aimed at the sustainable, risk-sensitive, and cultural development of Khokana, a traditional Newari village in Lalitpur, Nepal. Key components include a 20-year "visioning" workshop for urban planning, disaster risk reduction, and preserving the community's heritage, agricultural, and socio-economic life.

Key aspects of the Khokana development and visioning initiatives include:

• Visioning Workshop (2021-2024): Led by SIAS and Tomorrow's Cities, this program engaged local residents, farmers, and leaders to map out a "good life" for the next 20 years, focusing on disaster-resilient urban planning.

• Cultural and Historical Preservation: The program emphasizes protecting the traditional Newari architecture, the Guthi system, and the unique cultural heritage of the area, including the Rudrayani Temple and local festivals.

• Economic and Agricultural Development: Focus is placed on sustaining traditional livelihoods, such as mustard oil production, farming, and the promotion of tourism (e.g., the Khokana Tourism Festival 2020).

• Reconstruction and Infrastructure: Following earthquakes, initiatives have included managing the reconstruction of houses to maintain the traditional skyline and upgrading infrastructure like sewage and water pond management.

• Environmental Conservation: The program includes projects for local environmental enhancement, such as the promotion of medicinal plant nurseries.

The initiative aims to balance modernization with the preservation of the village's unique identity.
